Industry Overview

Renewable energy is an integral part of the global energy mix. It provides an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Energy consumption from renewable sources is expected to reach 12% by 2023, up from 10.4% in 2020. By 2024, renewable energy will supply 30% of the world's electricity and continue growing steadily. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has predicted that the sector will continue to grow steadily.

Increasingly affordable renewable technologies are one of the main drivers of renewable energy growth. During the last few years, wind and solar energy have become significantly more competitive with fossil fuels. In a report published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the cost of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems has decreased by 89% since 2010, while the cost of onshore wind has decreased by 70%.

Some government policies and incentives are also driving the growth of renewable energy. Many governments across the globe have implemented policies to support renewable energy development, which has helped drive investment in the sector. Given this, global investment in renewable energy increased exponentially.

Suzlon Energy share price history

  • 1995: Tulsi Tanti, a mechanical engineer, tended to his family’s textile business in Surat, Gujarat. The business was in bad health due to high operating costs caused by expensive electricity and frequent power outages. Tanti wanted to explore fuelling his business needs. In 1994, he purchased two wind turbines and produced electricity. In 1995, Suzlon was formed to give customers a complete package of wind energy services.
  • 1996-2000: It slowly gained prominence as a complete wind energy solutions provider and collaborated with German wind energy leader Südwind Energy GmbH to build its expertise in designing Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs). This action helped Suzlon set up WTGs across India from 1995 to 2000. Suzlon’s first 0.27MW WTG for Indian Petrochemicals Ltd in Gujarat. It also commissioned WTGs in the state of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. This rising network of WTGs increased the installed capacity, crossing the 100MW installed capacity mark in this period. Its first 1MW WTG was built for the then Tata Group Company, Niskalp Investments, in 2000.
  • 2021 onwards: Suzlon achieved a total Machine Availability (MA) of 96.86%. Even during the pandemic, Suzlon continued to provide uninterrupted power to the nation. The wind farms across nine states with 13,000 MW of wind assets, including substations and over 13,000 km of HT lines/ EHV lines, continued to function throughout this period. At COP26 in 2021, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced a multi-pronged approach to support climate action, setting targets of 500 GW of non-fossil fuels energy capacity by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2070.
